As a result of shelling by the russian army in Kharkov, 9 cemeteries and the Memorial of Victims of Totalitarianism were damaged. Administrative buildings of cemeteries were destroyed, tombstones were damaged and destroyed.
The memorial complex to the victims of totalitarianism in Kharkov was opened on June 17, 2000. The remains of 4,302 Polish prisoners of war were reburied at the cemetery, of which 493 officers were victims of the so-called Ukrainian Katyn List. The remains of 2,746 citizens of the former Soviet Union of various nationalities who became victims of the NKVD in 1937-1938 are buried in 60 smaller graves.
