Sixtiers artist Liubov Panchenko died in Bucha after a month of famine

01.05.2022

Bucha, Kyiv region

Liubov Panchenko, an 84-year-old Ukrainian Sixtiers artist and designer, winner of the Vasyl Stus Prize, died of starvation.

The woman belonged to a group of Sixtiers artists who revived Ukrainian culture during the Khrushchev Thaw.

Her work was saturated with Ukrainian colouring, which is why the work of the master was hushed up, and she herself was persecuted.

For a month, while Bucha was seized by russian invaders, 84-year-old artist Liubov Panchenko was in her house and starved - probably her body could not withstand such a burden. With the outbreak of the war for preservation, Panchenko transferred her creative heritage to the Museum of the Sixtiers.
